Window on Bangladesh

You see things differently when you know someone on the other side of the glass.

They’re not a vague shadow anymore, not a shuddered glimpse, not just a set of numbers scrolling across a page.

You see.

The glass is thick and bullet proof and you are safe beyond it. The window is small and tinted red and so you get but the merest flick of a view.

But you do see.

“There are soldiers outside my building” they said.

“They just dragged a student out of the apartment” they said.

“I have to go” they said. “I hear gun shots and I need to wipe my phone.”

Because if someone reads your messages, it could be they who next tints the window red.
