The king is dying. His most likely heir? Lot of Lothian, a ruthless tyrant already plotting with the realm’s enemies. Yet only a few know of his treachery. Arthur is a count’s sheltered foster son turned assassin. Anna is a sorcerous and politician who wants nothing more than to live quietly on her beloved Avalon. When they learn of Lot’s true intentions they must each leave their sanctuary and plunge into a world of intrigue and treachery lest Lot’s ambitions tear the realm apart and their homes with it.

But Lot is not the only one with hidden plans. In the north the Witch of the Orkneys schemes for her revenge. On the coast the princess of Cameliard fights to survive long enough to bring word of a raider plot. And behind all of it is the enchanter who seeks to pull the strings of the entire realm. Merlin may have seen a path to peace but foresight is only possibility and prophecy is only a shield in the minds of men.
